My first Whole30 I gave up coffee for the first two weeks completely because I couldn’t drink it without copious quantities of fake creamer. I’m glad I did since it really helped me get past the craving for sweets. I normally only drink my sweets instead of eating them, but I drank them ALL. DAY. LONG. After a little while I decided I would try some of the Whole30 coffee drink recipes out there as an afternoon treat.

It should be noted that this isn’t in the spirit of the true Whole30 and this is something I drink when I’m between Whole30s that uses allowed ingredients and is better than granulated sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It is vegan friendly as a bonus.

So there are many different “creams that you can use that are Whole30, coconut milk, coconut cream, almond milk, nutpods, Better Half, or even a mad scientist mixture of one or more of these. I tried all of the above to discover that coconut cream was too coconutty, coconut milk and almond milk are just not creamy enough, and nutpods was only a little creamier and had a “chemical taste” to it (I tried the Hazelnut, the original one may not have that). The winner of all of these by a LANDSLIDE is Original Unsweetened Better Half. It is creamy while not having too much of a coconut flavor. It has a body similar to, you guessed it, half and half. In all honesty it is somewhere between whole milk and half and half.

My trick to making it even creamier is to add smooth almond butter. Not just any almond butter works. Many of them are gritty and that is just unpleasant when you are going for a creamy latte texture. My favorite almond butter when I don’t make my own is Barney’s Bare Smooth, No Sugar, No Salt. It lets you control sweetness and saltiness better.

As it turns out, I love the flavor of dates in my coffee.  After the two weeks of no sugar at all I was able to drink it without making it so sweet as well. Since then I’ve done many variations of Whole30 coffee.  Here is my absolute favorite version with a boost of extra protein as well since I’m trying to gain muscle.
